I just finished the Susan Minot novel "Evening," that was mentioned in my last post. Perhaps it wasn't the best thing for a 74 year old to read, but it held me fast with Minot's words, and the strength and depth of her main character, Ann Grant/Lord.
The test is rambling and sometimes disjointed - properly so since Ann is dying of cancer and the morphine does strange things to her mind.
But her memory of the love of her life is so vivid that at times I felt I was there with them - for that wedding weekend on that island.
The cast of the film is so outstanding - down to Eileen Atkins as nurse Nora. I can't wait for this one.
Recommeded for serious, thoughtful reading.

New Streep Film
The Hollywood Reporter:
Family affair for Streep, Redgrave in "Evening" By Gregg Goldstein
Fri Sep 15, 1:51 AM ET
Meryl Streep and her daughter star in a family drama whose cast also includes Glenn Close, Vanessa Redgrave and her daughter, Natasha Richardson.
"Evening" is being directed by Hungarian filmmaker Lajos Koltai from an adaptation of Susan Minot's novel by Michael Cunningham ("The Hours"). Principal photography was scheduled to begin this week.
Streep and her 23-year-old daughter, Mamie Gummer, previously appeared together, albeit briefly, in 1986's "Heartburn" and 1993's "The House of the Spirits"; they will play the same character at different stages in her life. Redgrave and Richardson will play an onscreen parent and child.
Also on board are Toni Collette ("Little Miss Sunshine"), Patrick Wilson ("Little Children"), Claire Danes ("The Hours"), Hugh Dancy ("Ella Enchanted") and British veteran Eileen Atkins ("Gosford Park"). The Hart Sharp production will be released by Focus Features.
Redgrave plays a dying woman who recalls key moments in her life as she drifts in and out of consciousness. While awake and still under the influence of morphine, she discusses her life with her daughters (Richardson, Collette). Danes portrays Grant as a young woman, and Streep and Gummer play Grant's college friend at different ages.
Dancy portrays the main character's young suitor, and Close is cast as his mother. Atkins plays the dying woman's nurse.
At an early stage in the project's development, director Jonathan Caouette ("Tarnation") had been in preliminary discussions to direct, and Oscar-winning actress Ellen Burstyn was discussed for the lead role, but those deals never developed.
